The History of Tea
According to legend, in 2732 B.C., almost 5,000 years ago, Emperor Shen Nung – the Yan Emperor (or the “Divine Farmer”) – was boiling a kettle of water, when leaves from a nearby tree, carried aloft by the winds, drifted into it. Shen Nung – who would be credited for introducing agriculture and herbal medicine to the Middle Kingdom – became naturally curious, when he inhaled the intriguing and pleasing aroma that wafted upwards from those boiling leaves, and couldn’t help but to try some.
He didn’t regret it. The pleasant scent was matched by a feeling of warmth that spread throughout his body, as though the liquid, itself, was curious and investigating him, in return. Shen Nung named the drink “ch’a”, the Chinese kanji meaning “investigate”, or “check”. Thousands of years later, in 200 B.C., an emperor of the Han Dynsty decreed that there be changes to the “ch’a” Kanji. Changes to include a man standing between wooden branches, and the grass of the Earth, depicting how “ch’a”, what we call “tea”, brought Humanity and Nature into balance and harmony… Emperor Shen Nung never regretted his sampling of tea. You shouldn’t either.

Both coffee and tea are known to contain antioxidant-rich polyphenols with anti-inflammatory benefits,” says nutritionist Keri Gans, MS, RDN, and author of The Small Change Diet. Tea has been associated with lower risks of cancer and heart disease, along with stronger immune systems. Coffee packs an antioxidant rich punch, also. Coffee has been linked to reduced incidence of Parkinson’s disease, type 2 diabetes, scarring of the liver, colorectal cancer, and also heart disease.
A 2018 study of 500,000 people also showed that drinking coffee is associated with a lower risk of death—and that, surprisingly, the biggest reduction in mortality was found in people who drank six to seven cups per day. Since this was true for both caffeinated and decaf coffee drinkers, other coffee compounds seem to be responsible for lengthening lifespan—likely, this means the antioxidants.
